Executive Summary
This paper reports on the initial experimental results of the FAT (FRC Amplification via Translation) facility, which investigates the translation and trapping of a field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasma into a quasi-spherical confinement region. Successful translation and trapping were achieved at speeds ranging from 70 to 210 km/s without disruptive global tilt instability. Optical and magnetic diagnostic measurements demonstrate the evolution of separatrix shape, volume, and n = 2 rotational instability.
