McDaniel United States Air Force Historical Research Center Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama 36112 1990 PREFACE One of the chief functions of the Air Force History Program at all levels is to collect the documents that reveal the history of the Service. The basic sources for Air Force history consist of the unit and headquarters histories and their documentary annexes. However, Air Force historians also interview senior retired officers and civilians and key individuals at all levels, and collect their personal papers, in an effort to supplement the official materials and especially to capture the range of Air Force experience across time. One significant addition to the catalog is the inclusion of those collections of important papers relating to particular individuals, the source of which is not through the usual private donation. These collections are identified in the catalog by an asterisk (*). Instead, these documents, both personal and official in nature, have been uncovered among the Center's overall holdings, having in the past been intermingled among the administrative records of the organizations in which the individuals served. Another innovation is the inclusion of an appendix giving summary details of those personal papers collections which are generally available to researchers but are not yet fully processed. (Researchers interested in such materials should first write to the Center about their availability). The continuous acquisition of private donations has led us to plan for yet another, sixth, edition of this work. In the meantime, I offer this current version to our readers in the hope that it will exceed its predecessor in usefulness. RICHARD H. KOHN Chief, Office of Air Force History INTRODUCTION This is the Fifth Edition of Personal Papers in the United States Air Force Historical Research Center. The first, issued in 1971, described some 61 collections; a revised edition of 1973 comprised 74; the third catalog of 1975 contained 89; and the fourth catalog included 134 in 1980. The present work includes 381 collections. The material covers the entire range of American military aviation, from such early pioneers as Benny Foulois, Frank Lahm, and Hap Arnold to such recent figures as Bruce Holloway, William Momyer, and John Ryan. Not surprisingly, the papers of significant Air Force leaders and policymakers predominate. Yet a sizable fraction of the documents includes the personal collections of aircraft designers, explorers, authors, journalists and public officials, whose fundamental contributions are an indispensable part of the history of military aviation. The Fifth Edition contains three types of collections. The first is a continuation of material found in the fourth edition, being personal and official papers donated by private sources as formal and autonomous collections. The second type (identified by an *) contains personal and official papers, identified with a specific individual, but received through government channels. These documents have been located among related materials throughout the Center's general collection. The third type consists of those personal collections accessioned by the Center and generally available to researchers but not yet fully processed. Such collections are identified in summary form in the Appendix. (Researchers interested in such materials should first write to the Center about their availability). Entries are listed in alphabetical order under the principal's name. Immediately thereafter is the collection's chronological range. The entry contains information concerning the volume (in cubic feet) of material, as well as the file number and the finding number of our automated retrieval system IRIS. Those collections which the Center possesses only in microfilm copy are so indicated; the term "negative microfilm" means that this medium is the one which a visiting researcher would use at the Center. Then follows a selective biographical entry of the principal: his birth date and place (when known), his highest grade attained, the component (USAAF, USAF, etc.) that was current at his retirement date, his period of service, his civilian and military education, highlights of his military service, his retirement and death dates, and any major publications he authored. A third section contains a brief description of the collection's contents. Yet another section describes any administrative or security restrictions, as well as the existence of related material in the Center and/or elsewhere. Finally, each entry and selected topics in the collection's contents have been indexed for ease in reference, including both the page number and the applicable collection.
