The Reaction Research Society (RRS) met on Friday, September 13, 2019. We had several new people come out to visit including the CSU Long Beach liquid rocket team (Abel, Wally, Tustin and Hunter from the CSULB Beach Launch Team), who came to learn more about the society and our resources at the Mojave Test Area (MTA). The RRS celebrated three new licensed pyro-ops: Osvaldo Tarditti, Larry Hoffing, and Dave Nordling, which will assist in holding more events at the MTA. Before getting to the agenda topics, members shared stories and project updates: - Wolfram Blume, a new member to the RRS, discussed his plans to static fire a gasoline-fueled subsonic ramjet called the 'Gas Guzzler' project, which he has been working on since 2011. - Waldo Stakes shared his latest progress on a steam rocket being developed for Mad Mike Hughes, as well as his work with Compton College on planning their large liquid rocket. - RRS member Kent Schwitkis and students Mario and Oscar from Compton College attended, discussing student tasks and project assistance. - Bill Behenna showcased a prototype of an avionics payload designed to measure acceleration and barometric pressure for flight in standard RRS alphas. Following the showcase, the meeting was called to order and the treasury report was read. The RRS has finished the last classroom presentation of the series. Students have painted their rockets and are prepared for launch day on Saturday, September 21, 2019. Propellant loading will prepare the rockets for flight at the desert site. Osvaldo Tarditti has been leading efforts to evaluate MTA facility improvements, focusing on upgrading restroom facilities and replacing the old blockhouse. Quotes are being sought for new restroom facilities based on initial drawings. Additionally, repairs are underway on the large adjustable rail launcher, which was damaged in early August during a failed solid motor launch attempt. The site also experienced theft from the George Dosa building; proposed security countermeasures include installing cameras, upgrading locks and doors, fitting opaque window inserts, and increasing on-site presence. The committee was unable to present its report this month due to delays over the summer. The report is rescheduled for presentation at the October meeting. The administrative membership voted in favor of holding the next RRS Symposium in Spring 2020 (likely in April), continuing the annual event series established in 2017. Frank Miuccio will serve as symposium coordinator to reach out to presenters and exhibitors. Dr. Khalil Dajani of CSU Long Beach invited the RRS to present at the Space Responsiveness Workshop and Exhibit at Antelope Valley College (Hellenic Center in Lancaster, California) during the 2019 California Aerospace Technologies Institute of Excellence (CATIE) event on September 18th to showcase capabilities at the Mojave Test Area. Discussions were held regarding social events, including a proposed group visit to Mt. Wilson and reviving traditional barbecue gatherings at the MTA. Lifetime member George Garboden has provided multiple boxes of historical RRS papers and reports for society archival. Efforts led by Frank, Larry, and Dave are focused on securing a storage location and scanning materials for digital access. Alastair Martin announced an upcoming episode of 'Rocket Talk Radio' on September 28th as part of the 'Before SpaceX' series, featuring an interview with Jim French conducted by Dave Nordling and Richard Garcia. French worked on the H-1 and F-1 engines at Rocketdyne in the 1950s, the Apollo Lunar Descent engine at TRW in the 1960s, authored 'Firing a Rocket Engine', and worked for the American Rocket Company (AMROC) in Camarillo during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The society commemorated the passing of longtime member George Dosa, recognizing his profound contributions to the RRS and its members. The meeting was adjourned with the next monthly meeting scheduled for October 11, 2019.
