Executive Summary
This paper investigates how charge-exchange (CX) neutral outflux measurements using stripping-cell ion-energy analyzers (SC-IEAs) can be used to infer the true ion energy distribution (IEDp) in small, high-beta, RF-heated field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasmas. Using a synthetic diagnostic module in a single-particle Hamiltonian code, the authors demonstrate that measured ion energy distributions (IEDm) are strongly dependent on detector viewing angles, orientation relative to the plasma current, and line-of-sight elevation due to unique orbit classes (cyclotron, betatron, and figure-8) associated with internal magnetic nulls.
