Overview & Biography

Harry Mason Reid (b. December 2, 1939, in Searchlight, NV; d. December 28, 2021) was a former Democratic member of the United States Senate from the state of Nevada. Reid served in the Senate from 1987 to 2017. He served as the Senate Minority Leader from 2015 to 2017. He previously served as Senate Majority Leader from January 2007 to January 2015. Prior to his election to the United States Senate, Reid served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983 to 1987. On December 28, 2021, Reid died from pancreatic cancer. Reid was born in Searchlight, Nevada. Reid attended Southern Utah University and graduated from Utah State University. He then went to George Washington University Law School earning a J.D. while working for the United States Capitol Police.
