Lockheed Missiles and Space Company Overview
In 1965, Maxwell Hunter returned to private industry, joining the Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, in Sunnyvale, California, working in the astronautics (rocket) division and advanced development section. He was responsible for the design of advanced space transport vehicles, developing the use of expendable tanks in the space shuttle, and steering the Hubble space telescope through its early stages.
Max was with Lockheed for 22 years from 1965 to 1987. During this period, he was responsible for the design of the Advanced Space Transportation Vehicles Star Clipper and Shuttle, and originated the concept of using large expendable tanks in shuttle design.
He led the proposal that won the Hubble Space Telescope project, and was program manager during the 4-year creation phase of its design. He did extensive work on the defensive applications of high energy lasers and originated the Space Battle Station concept.
In 1981, Max received the NASA Public Service medal for definition and promotion of the space shuttle and its utilization.
"He was a visionary as an engineer and received widespread recognition throughout the industry and NASA as a forward thinker," said Steve Tatum, a spokesman for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space Operations in Sunnyvale, in 2001. "He led the proposal that won the Hubble Space Telescope for Lockheed and was a major proponent for a reusable single-stage orbit vehicle."
