Eurodrone

Eurodrone (formerly known as European MALE RPAS) is a European Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle program managed by OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d'Armement) on behalf of Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. The program aims to develop a sovereign European MALE UAV to replace existing US-made systems and reduce European dependence on American UAV technology.

The industrial team is led by Airbus Defence and Space (Germany) as prime contractor, with Dassault Aviation (France) and Leonardo (Italy) as major partners. This industrial structure mirrors the FCAS (Future Combat Air System) partnership, reflecting the broader pattern of Franco-German-Italian defense industrial cooperation.

A key development contract was signed in February 2023, marking the transition from concept studies to full development. The contract covers the design, development, and initial production of the Eurodrone system, including the air vehicles, ground stations, and support infrastructure.

Eurodrone specifications include:

• Wingspan: approximately 26 meters
• Length: approximately 15 meters
• Maximum takeoff weight: approximately 11 tons
• Endurance: up to 24 hours
• Service ceiling: approximately 40,000 feet
• Payload: multi-sensor ISR, potential weapons capability

The system is designed to perform Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions, with potential for weapons delivery. Eurodrone will be equipped with satellite communication for beyond-line-of-sight operation and will feature advanced sensors including electro-optical/infrared cameras, synthetic aperture radar, and signals intelligence payloads.

The program addresses a critical European capability gap. Currently, European nations rely primarily on US-made MQ-9 Reaper/SeaGuardian drones for MALE UAV capability. The Eurodrone program aims to provide a sovereign alternative that is not subject to US export controls and ITAR restrictions, which have complicated European UAV operations and exports in the past.

Eurodrone is distinct from but complementary to the FCAS program. While FCAS focuses on sixth-generation manned fighters and collaborative combat aircraft (CCA), Eurodrone provides the MALE UAV capability that will be part of the broader future combat air system. The two programs share industrial partners and technology development.

The program has faced some delays and cost increases during the development phase, which is common for complex multinational defense programs. However, the commitment of all four partner nations and the industrial team has kept the program moving forward. Initial operational capability is targeted for the early 2030s.
