Eurofighter EK (Electronic Combat)

Eurofighter EK (Electronic Combat) is a specialized variant of the Eurofighter Typhoon being developed for the German Luftwaffe to perform Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) and Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses (DEAD) missions. The program was initiated in the early 2020s to address Germany's need for a dedicated electronic attack capability, particularly following the retirement of the Tornado ECR (Electronic Combat Reconnaissance) aircraft.

The Eurofighter EK will be equipped with a comprehensive electronic warfare suite including:

1. Advanced EW pod: A new electronic warfare pod (potentially based on the Saab Arexis or similar system) providing wideband electronic attack and electronic support measures.

2. Anti-radiation missiles: Integration of the AGM-88G AARGM-ER (Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile - Extended Range) or similar weapons for destroying enemy radar systems.

3. Enhanced communications jamming: Capability to jam enemy communications and data links, disrupting the enemy's command and control.

4. Improved self-protection: Upgraded defensive aids including advanced chaff/flare dispensers and towed decoys.

5. Mission system integration: The EW systems will be fully integrated with the Eurofighter's mission system, allowing the crew to manage EW operations alongside other mission tasks.

The Eurofighter EK program reflects the growing importance of electronic warfare in modern air operations. The conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated that SEAD/DEAD capabilities are critical for operating in contested airspace, where advanced surface-to-air missile systems pose a significant threat to aircraft.

Germany's decision to develop the Eurofighter EK rather than purchase a US platform (like the EA-18G Growler) reflects the European emphasis on sovereign defense capabilities and the desire to maintain European industrial expertise in electronic warfare. However, the program may involve cooperation with US industry on specific components like the AARGM-ER missile.

The Luftwaffe plans to acquire approximately 15-20 Eurofighter EK aircraft, which will form the core of Germany's electronic attack capability. The aircraft will work alongside standard Eurofighters and the future FCAS system to provide comprehensive air combat capability.

The Eurofighter EK connects to the broader European EW ecosystem, which includes the Saab Arexis (Sweden), the European Eurofighter EW developments, and various national EW programs. The program also connects to NATO SEAD/DEAD capabilities and the broader allied electronic warfare architecture.
