FOA announced September 2022, applications December 2022, 8 selectees May 2023, agreements signed June 2024 (13-month delay due to IP concerns). 8 recipients: Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Focused Energy, Thea Energy (formerly Princeton Stellarators), Realta Fusion, Tokamak Energy, Type One Energy, Xcimer Energy, Zap Energy. Notable absences: TAE Technologies and Helion Energy (sufficient private funding). Complemented by $180M FIRE Collaboratives program (2024+). Target: preliminary engineering designs for fusion pilot plant(s) within 5-10 years.
