01 Definition

A destructive internal MHD instability where an FRC torus flips perpendicular to the axis, suppressed by kinetic effects and elongation.

02 Detailed_Analysis

The internal tilt mode is an ideal magnetohydrodynamic instability in which the magnetic dipole moment of a Field-Reversed Configuration attempts to align with the external axial magnetic field, flipping the plasma torus 90 degrees. While ideal MHD predicts rapid disruption, the mode is mitigated in practice through high plasma elongation (E > 3) and finite Larmor radius (FLR) kinetic effects when the ion gyroradius is large relative to plasma size.

03 Key_Facts

  • Ideal MHD predicts destructive tilting within a single Alfven transit time.
  • Mitigated experimentally by maintaining high plasma elongation (E >> 1).
  • Further suppressed by large-orbit ion kinetic effects (s* parameter).
  • Critical factor governing the geometry and scaling of compact FRC reactors.
