Electron Power Systems (EPS) is based at 42 Washington Drive, Acton, MA 01720. The company developed the ESTS technology with funding from NASA (1995), ARO (1996), BMDO STTR (with DTRA as technical representative), AFOSR, and NASA NIAC (1999). The company's technology page states: 'We have made a new discovery of a self-stable plasma toroid (ring) that needs no magnetic field confinement. This has been proven with lab results and data, with a computer model, and with a derivation of the physics as published in Physics of Plasmas by Dr. Chen of MIT.' The applications page explicitly lists 'Air and Missile defense beam' projecting 600,000 m/s velocity and 100 km range. The BMDO SBIR award (BMDO97T003) states the ESTS presents 'an extraordinary opportunity to obtain a breakthrough in capabilities for missile defense systems' with 'Directed Energy: Pulses of 100 megajoules in one microsecond.' EPS also projected a 'significant electric propulsion device for space transportation' at '>99% less mass because we need no magnetic containment.'
