Electron Spiral Toroid Spheromak (ESTS)

The Electron Spiral Toroid Spheromak (ESTS) is the key technology enabling plasma orb weapons. It is a hollow toroid of electrons and ions where all particles travel in parallel paths orthogonal to the toroid circumference, effectively spiraling around the toroid. The electron motion creates a surface current that generates an internal magnetic field. The structure is charge-neutralized by surrounding ions and is force-free — no external magnetic field is needed for confinement. The ESTS is stable in partial atmosphere and has been observed to last for more than 600 milliseconds. The ion density has been measured at 3.0 x 10^19 ions/cm^3, approximately 10,000 times greater than the most reported by a tokamak plasma fusion device. The ESTS was discovered in 1985 by Clint Seward, who initially called it the Electron Spiral Toroid (EST). The first patent was issued in 1992 (US5773919A). NASA provided initial research funding in 1995. In 1996, the Army Research Laboratory reviewed the theory and agreed the EST is a potential energy storage breakthrough. Based on this recommendation, the Army Research Office funded a project for MIT to study the stability and energy loss of the EST. The BMDO STTR contract (with DTRA as technical representative) continued the study and demonstrated experimental scaling. Dr. Chiping Chen of MIT independently derived and confirmed the physics, publishing in Physics of Plasmas (2001). The BMDO SBIR award (BMDO97T003) stated the ESTS presents 'an extraordinary opportunity to obtain a breakthrough in capabilities for missile defense systems' with 'Directed Energy: Pulses of 100 megajoules in one microsecond.' EPS projected a 600,000 m/s air/missile-defense beam engaging a target 100 km away in under one second. A NASA technical review (NASA/CR-2000-210654) challenged absolute stability and energy-density claims, finding the ion fluid fundamentally unstable, though noting 'undeniable experimental evidence that some type of plasma structures whose characteristics remain to be determined are observed.' Seward published the IEEE Access paper in 2014 demonstrating 600+ ms stability. A continuation patent (US10201070) was issued in 2019.
