HELMA-P

HELMA-P (Haute Énergie Laser pour Multiples Applications - Puissance) is a French laser directed-energy weapon system developed by CILAS, a subsidiary of ArianeGroup (itself a joint venture of Airbus and Safran). The program is funded by the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) and represents France's primary sovereign laser weapon development effort.

The system is designed primarily for counter-UAS (counter-unmanned aircraft systems) applications, addressing the growing threat posed by drone swarms in both military and civilian contexts. HELMA-P has been demonstrated in multiple live-fire test campaigns at DGA test ranges, successfully engaging and destroying various types of drone targets.

Key technical aspects of HELMA-P include:

• Solid-state laser source with multi-kilowatt power output
• Advanced beam director for target tracking and beam pointing
• Integrated fire control system with target acquisition and tracking sensors
• Mobile platform configuration for tactical deployment

The French military has expressed growing interest in deploying laser weapons for force protection, particularly for protecting forward-deployed troops, critical infrastructure, and naval vessels. The French Navy has been particularly interested in laser weapons for ship self-defense against drone swarms and small fast attack craft, as demonstrated by Houthi drone and missile attacks in the Red Sea.

HELMA-P has been tested in operational contexts, including deployment during military exercises and demonstrations for French and allied military officials. The system has demonstrated the ability to track, engage, and destroy small drones at ranges of several hundred meters to a few kilometers, depending on target type and environmental conditions.

CILAS, the prime contractor for HELMA-P, has extensive experience in laser technology and optical systems. The company has been involved in various laser programs including laser designators, laser rangefinders, and directed energy research. The HELMA-P program leverages this expertise to develop a practical, deployable laser weapon system.

The French approach to laser weapons is somewhat distinct from the UK DragonFire program in that it emphasizes a sovereign French development path rather than a consortium approach. However, both programs contribute to the broader European DEW capability and there is potential for future cooperation or technology sharing, particularly within NATO and European Defence Fund frameworks.
