Neutron Degradation

The progressive deterioration of material properties caused by prolonged exposure to neutron radiation. Neutrons displace atoms in the crystal lattice, causing embrittlement, swelling, and loss of mechanical strength. In fusion reactors, neutron degradationneutron degradation limits the lifetime of structural components and requires periodic replacement of first-wall and blanket modules.
