Overview
The Princeton Field-Reversed Configuration (PFRC) is a compact FRC experiment at PPPL. The PFRC uses a unique approach to FRC heating and sustainment using rotating magnetic fields (RMF).
Lineage
PFRC descends from LANL's FRX research (1970s-1980s). The FRC physics foundation established at LANL propagated to multiple institutions:
- MSNW/Helion (inductive plasma accelerator)
- TAE Technologies (collisional merging)
- Princeton/PFRC (rotating magnetic field heating)
- AFRL/FRCHX (solid liner compression)
DFD Connection
The PFRC enables the Direct Fusion Drive (DFD) propulsion concept developed by Princeton Satellite Systems. The DFD uses the PFRC to generate thrust for interplanetary spacecraft.
