Timberwind — Classified SDIO Nuclear Thermal Propulsion

Program Overview Timberwind was a classified nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) program under the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO), running from 1987 to 1992. The program aimed to develop a compact nuclear thermal rocket for use in SDI missile defense interceptors — specifically for the Brilliant Pebbles concept that required rapid orbital maneuvering.

Strategic Relevance Timberwind is a critical Black Track program because it demonstrates the parallel classified track for nuclear space propulsion. While SP-100 (White Track) was developing space nuclear reactors for power, Timberwind (Black Track) was developing nuclear thermal rockets for weapons applications. The two programs existed simultaneously, sharing technology but with different classification levels and objectives.
