Armour Research Foundation
Early classified military effort to explore plasmoid dynamics for ballistic missile defense.
01 Definition
Historic IIT research body that conducted classified US Air Force plasmoid and fireball physics research (1958–1962).
02 Detailed_Analysis
The Armour Research Foundation (ARF) of the Illinois Institute of Technology (later renamed IIT Research Institute, IITRI) conducted a classified Air Force contract (AF 33(616)-5791) between 1958 and 1962. Led by Principal Investigator Dale J. DeGeeter, the project successfully replicated Winston Bostick's high-speed vacuum spark plasmoids to analyze plasmoid-plasmoid collisions, magnetic field steering, and the feasibility of weaponized artificial ball lightning for anti-missile and satellite defense applications.

04 Deep_Dive_Intelligence
The Armour Research Foundation conducted plasmoid research from 1958-1962 under Contract AF 33(616)-5791, titled 'Research in the Measurements and Theory of Plasmoids and their Applications to Missiles and Satellite Technology.' Principal Investigator was Dale J. Degeeter. The program successfully reproduced Winston Bostick's plasmoids using high-speed metal spark discharge in high vacuum (10^-6 torr). Experiments measured plasmoid velocity, obstacle interaction, magnetic field interaction, and plasmoid-plasmoid interaction. Specialized equipment included capacitor discharge circuits and a high-speed camera with image converter tube. The program was directly inspired by Peter Kapitza's 1955 standing wave theory of ball lightning. A December 1960 Radio-Electronics article stated: 'Electronic fireballs of highly concentrated charged particles (plasma) might be used to destroy missiles... The balls would be kept active and be guided by a concentration of radar beams.' The program ended in 1962 with no known follow-on. ARF was renamed IIT Research Institute (IITRI) in 1963. This program is the strongest candidate for the redacted Chapter 5.4 of Davis's AFRL Ball Lightning Study (AFRL-PR-ED-TR-2002-0039), which was redacted under FOIA Exemption (b)(3), 10 USC 130.
