Rheinmetall AG is a major German defense technology company founded in 1889, headquartered in Düsseldorf. The system uses a multi-kilowatt laser source combined with an advanced beam director and fire control system.

Rheinmetall's DEW portfolio also includes the Oerlikon Skyshield and Skyranger air defense systems, which can be equipped with various weapon modules including laser weapons. The company has been developing laser weapon technology for over a decade, with earlier demonstrations including a 50-kW laser weapon test in 2013 that successfully engaged targets at distances of up to 500 meters.

Beyond DEW, Rheinmetall is a major player in European defense procurement. The company is a key partner in the Leopard 2 main battle tank program, the Puma infantry fighting vehicle, the Boxer armored vehicle, and various ammunition programs. Rheinmetall has also been significantly involved in supporting Ukraine with military equipment, including tanks, ammunition, and air defense systems.

In the context of the broader European defense ecosystem, Rheinmetall's DEW work connects to multiple programs: the German Navy's air defense modernization, the European Sky Shield Initiative, and NATO's directed energy weapons cooperation. The company's partnership with MBDA on the naval HEL system represents one of the most advanced operational laser weapon programs in Europe.

Rheinmetall has also been expanding its presence in the hypersonic and advanced propulsion domain, with investments in scramjet technology and high-speed missile development.
