MBDA

MBDA is the largest European missile manufacturer, formed in December 2001 through the consolidation of the missile businesses of Airbus (formerly EADS), BAE Systems, and Leonardo (formerly Finmeccanica). The company is headquartered in France with major facilities in the UK, Italy, Germany, and Spain. MBDA's ownership structure—Airbus 37.5%, BAE Systems 37.5%, Leonardo 25%—reflects its pan-European character.

MBDA's product portfolio spans the full spectrum of missile and missile defense systems:

• Strategic cruise missiles: Storm Shadow/SCALP EG air-launched cruise missile, used by the UK, France, Italy, and other operators. The missile has been extensively used in combat operations including Iraq, Libya, and Ukraine.

• Air-to-air missiles: Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM), a ramjet-powered missile deployed on Eurofighter Typhoon, Rafale, and Gripen. MICA (Missile d'Interception, de Combat et d'Autodéfense) short-range missile.

• Air defense systems: Aster 30 (SAMP/T) medium-range surface-to-air missile system, CAMM (Common Anti-Air Modular Missile) for land and naval air defense, and the Sea Ceptor naval air defense system.

• Anti-ship missiles: Exocet, Marte, and Sea Venom anti-ship missiles.

• Precision strike: Brimstone air-to-ground missile, Spear 3 precision strike weapon.

In the directed-energy weapons domain, MBDA has partnered with Rheinmetall to develop a naval high-energy laser weapon system, successfully demonstrated in October 2023. MBDA is also involved in laser weapon programs in France (HELMA-P) and the UK (DragonFire consortium, where MBDA serves as prime contractor).

MBDA is a key participant in multiple European defense programs including FCAS (Future Combat Air System), where it will provide the weapon systems for the New Generation Fighter; the European Sky Shield Initiative, where its Aster and CAMM systems are central; and various national air defense modernization programs.

The company's involvement in both kinetic missiles and directed-energy weapons positions it at the intersection of traditional and next-generation weapons technology. MBDA's role as prime contractor on DragonFire and partner on the Rheinmetall naval HEL makes it one of the most important European companies in the DEW space, alongside Rheinmetall and Leonardo.
