SAMP/T NG

SAMP/T NG (Sol-Air Moyenne Portée Terrestre Nouvelle Génération) is the next-generation surface-to-air missile system developed by Eurosam, a joint venture between MBDA (France/Italy/UK) and Thales (France). The system is the successor to the SAMP/T (also known as MAMBA in French service) system that has been operational with the French and Italian armies since 2011.

The SAMP/T NG program was launched to address evolving air defense threats and incorporate technological advances since the original SAMP/T entered service. Key improvements in the NG variant include:

1. Aster 30 Block 2 missile: The new missile variant provides enhanced kinematic performance, extended range (up to 150+ km), and improved capability against ballistic missile targets. The Aster 30 Block 2 is designed to intercept medium-range ballistic missiles, providing a theater-level BMD capability.

2. Upgraded radar: SAMP/T NG incorporates a new generation Ground Fire radar (or equivalent) with improved detection range, tracking precision, and simultaneous target engagement capability. The radar can track hundreds of targets simultaneously and guide multiple missiles to intercept.

3. Enhanced command and control: The NG system features an upgraded command and control system with improved interoperability with NATO air defense networks and allied systems.

4. Improved mobility: The system is designed for rapid deployment and redeployment, with all components transportable by C-130 or A400M aircraft.

SAMP/T NG is a critical component of European air defense modernization, particularly in the context of the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI). The system complements the US Patriot system and the Israeli Arrow 3 system in the layered European air defense architecture. France and Italy have both committed to acquiring SAMP/T NG, and the system is being offered to other European nations through ESSI.

The system has demonstrated its capabilities in various exercises and has been deployed operationally, including by France to protect the 2024 Paris Olympics. The original SAMP/T has also been deployed to Ukraine, where it has been used to intercept Russian missiles and drones, providing valuable combat experience that informs the NG development.

Eurosam, the manufacturer, is a 50/50 joint venture between MBDA and Thales. MBDA provides the missile and launcher systems, while Thales provides the radar and command and control systems. This Franco-Italian industrial partnership is one of the most successful European defense collaboration programs.

SAMP/T NG connects to the broader European air defense ecosystem through its role in ESSI, its complementarity with Patriot and NASAMS, and its industrial connection to MBDA (which also produces CAMM, Storm Shadow, and other European missile systems). The system's BMD capability also connects it to NATO missile defense architecture.
