2. Defense and DEW Programs

This chapter examines Argentina's defense and directed energy weapons (DEW) programs in the context of the country's broader plasma physics and fusion research ecosystem. 2.3 No Plasma Weapons Connection

A central question of this investigation is whether Argentina's fusion-fission hybrid research at Bariloche has any connection to plasma weapons development. The evidence is clear: it does not. The fusion-fission hybrid research program is a civilian energy research initiative conducted under CNEA authority and IAEA safeguards. The fusion-fission hybrid concept does have theoretical dual-use implications — the ability to breed fissile material and transmute nuclear waste could be relevant to nuclear weapons programs.
