Unlike many countries in this investigation series that have no DEW capability, Australia has an active and growing laser DEW program. The investigation identified three primary nodes in Australia's DEW ecosystem: the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), AIM Defence, and QinetiQ Australia. These entities are connected through defence contracts, technology development partnerships, and operational testing relationships.
2.1 DSTG: Defence Science and Technology Group
DSTG (Defence Science and Technology Group) is the Australian government's lead defence research agency, responsible for providing scientific and technical advice to the Australian Defence Force and the Department of Defence. DSTG is the primary funder and coordinator of Australia's directed energy weapons research, operating programs in high-energy laser (HEL) weapons, high-power microwave (HPM) systems, and electromagnetic warfare.

The Fractl system has been publicly demonstrated achieving hard kill effects against drone targets at a range of 500 meters, representing a significant milestone in Australia's indigenous DEW development.

The hard kill capability at 500 meters represents a tactically useful but relatively short-range engagement envelope, consistent with fiber laser technology at current power levels.
AIM Defence has publicly demonstrated the Fractl system at Australian defence exhibitions and has received DSTG support for further development. The system represents Australia's most advanced indigenous DEW capability and demonstrates the country's ability to develop and field laser-based weapons systems.
2.3 QinetiQ Australia and the $12.9 Million DSTG Contract
QinetiQ Australia, a subsidiary of the UK-based QinetiQ Group, has been awarded a $12.9 million contract by DSTG for directed energy weapons development. The contract supports research and development in high-energy laser systems, beam control technologies, and DEW integration with Australian Defence Force platforms.

2.4 No Plasma Weapons Programs
A central question of this investigation is whether Australia's DEW programs extend beyond conventional laser weapons into plasma-based weapons. The evidence is clear: they do not. Australia's DEW development is entirely focused on solid-state laser systems for counter-UAS applications. There is no evidence of plasma orb weapons research, plasma projectile development, plasma confinement for weapons purposes, or any other plasma-based weapons program in Australia's defence ecosystem.
The distinction between laser DEW and plasma weapons is important. Laser weapons generate electromagnetic radiation (photons) that damage targets through thermal effects. Plasma weapons would generate and project ionized gas (plasma) as a weapons mechanism — a fundamentally different technology with no demonstrated operational capability anywhere in the world. Australia's DEW programs operate firmly within the laser technology domain.
2.5 Defense Industrial Base for DEW
Australia's DEW industrial base is nascent but growing, supported by DSTG funding and the AUKUS partnership framework. The key industrial participants include AIM Defence (indigenous laser weapon developer), QinetiQ Australia (UK-linked DEW contractor), and various Australian universities conducting supporting research in laser physics, beam control, and target effects modeling.
The defence industrial base for DEW is distinct from any plasma physics research infrastructure. There is no overlap between Australia's DEW industrial base and the ANSTO nuclear science program. The two ecosystems operate independently, with DEW development managed by DSTG and nuclear science managed by ANSTO under different ministerial authorities.
