3. International Cooperation and Strategic Position

While the country's overall fusion research budget is modest compared to the largest programs, DIFFER's specialization in plasma-wall interaction has given the Netherlands world-leading capabilities in this critical area. Magnum-PSI is one of only a few facilities worldwide capable of generating ITER-relevant plasma conditions for materials testing, making the Netherlands an indispensable contributor to the international fusion research effort.

The Netherlands' strategy of specialization rather than breadth has proven effective.
