Overview

AFRL/DE is the Directed Energy Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory, located at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. It is the US military's primary organization for directed energy weapons research, including high-power microwaves, lasers, and plasma weapons.

The 30+ Year Plasma Orb Program

Research rounds identified a continuous 30+ year plasma orb research program at AFRL/DE, tracked by Job Order Number (JON) 48470159. This program encompasses:

• MARAUDER (1993): Magnetically Accelerated Ring to Achieve Ultra-high Directed Energy and Radiation. Used the Shiva Star 9.5 MJ capacitor bank to create and accelerate compact toroids (plasma rings) at 600,000 m/s. Published results showed 1,000-fold acceleration beyond prior art.
• FRCHX (2008-2012): Field-Reversed Configuration Heating Experiment. Continued compact toroid research at AFRL.
• Grant Mead studies (2003-2004): Eric Davis conducted studies for AFRL/DE on advanced propulsion concepts.
• Nachamkin force-free plasmoid model (1992): AFRL-commissioned theoretical model for self-stable plasma configurations.
