Message from the Administrator (Summary)
Administrator Charles F. Bolden Jr. submitted the President’s FY 2011 Budget Request of 6B in new funding over 5 years. Highlights include: completing the Space Shuttle manifest safely with retirement planned by end of calendar year 2010; full utilization and extension of the International Space Station to at least 2020; cancellation of the Constellation Program in line with the Augustine Committee findings; expansion of climate-related Earth observation missions (including OCO replacement OCO-2); fostering a commercial crew and cargo spaceflight industry; and renewing commitment to technology development and robust STEM education.
Science Mission Directorate Overview
SMD conducts scientific exploration across four themes: Earth Science, Planetary Science, Astrophysics, and Heliophysics. Key questions address the origin and destiny of the universe, the origins of life and planets, whether we are alone, and understanding Earth’s complex systems and climate. In FY 2011, Earth Science begins a major global climate initiative ($2.1B increase over 5 years), accelerations of Tier-1 Decadal Survey missions (SMAP, ICESat-2, CLARREO, DESDynI), OCO-2 reflight, and expanding Venture-class missions. Planetary Science continues operations of Cassini, MESSENGER, Dawn, and MRO while advancing MSL, MAVEN, and LADEE. Astrophysics advances JWST towards a 2014 launch, SOFIA flight testing, and NuSTAR development. Heliophysics focuses on MMS, RBSP, Solar Probe Plus, and IRIS.
Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate Overview
ARMD oversees fundamental and system-level research to improve civil aviation safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Programs include Aviation Safety (AvSP), Airspace Systems (ASP), Fundamental Aeronautics (FAP), Integrated Systems Research (ISRP), and Aeronautics Test (ATP).
