C. Report/Summary Date: 4/1/1952 Abstract/Objective: The thermoelectric characteristics were determined for the thermocouple MoSi2/Pt and ZrB2/Pt. Instability of emf output disqualifies these combinations from high temperature application in jet engine control. Chromel-alumel thermocouples were fabricated with various shapes of the hot junction. The design was intended to achieve rapid heat transfer from the gas stream to the metal and adequate structural strength of the assembly. Characteristic response times were determined in a hot gas jet with a mass flow rate of 4 lb/sec/ft2. The recorded data represent the interaction of the time sweep on an oscillograph screen with the 63.2% mark of the thermal emf rise. The best response, namely 0.75 second, was obtained from a thermocouple with a butt welded hot junction of thin-wall tubular elements (0.065” OD x 0.005” wall). Report/Summary Date: 8/1/1983 Abstract/Objective: For about 25 years various investigators at IIT Research Institute (IITRI) have been developing animal model systems to measure the holistic response to drugs, chemicals, and air pollutants. In 1958, the first report on the effects of ozone (O3) on bacterial pneumonia was published by Miller and Ehrlich. That research, supported by the United States Air Force, was the basis for our subsequent programs in which several infectious disease models were used to evaluate the effects of a variety of toxicants. Table 1 shows thirteen infectious disease models and one tumor challenge model we have used in mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, or squirrel monkeys. With the exception of the diethylstilbestrol (DES), all toxicants were administered by the inhalation route. Other investigators are working with a variety of tumor and infectious disease models to evaluate toxicants administered by various routes and Dean et al. (1982b) have summarized this research. As a consequence there is a wide selection of host resistance models available for use.
